Those Three Words

from For Everybody And No One by Matt Midgley

/

lyrics

My shoes stick in my throat
My words trip up on this swollen subway floor
That's going nowhere

And the lights, and the smoke, and the sound hits me
All at once I'm alive yet I don't
Feel anything at all

I can't hear, but I laugh
And you laugh back 'til we're almost out of air
I'm deflated, and hollow, and empty, and wasted

Those words are overused and under-meant
They roll off the tongue like and empty promise
So quick to dismiss what we say when we've had a few
But I've never been more honest when I say:

It's my round, no I don't mind
I've got to get out of this crowd and out of my head
And out of yours too

And we dance, and we scowl
United by that bastard and that's all
That's all

Those words are overused and under-meant
They roll off the tongue like and empty promise
So quick to dismiss what we say when we've had a few
But I've never been more honest when I say:

I don't love you

I don't love you
I've never loved you
